QR Code stands for "Quick Response Code". It is a two-dimensional (2D) barcode invented in 1994 by an engineering team led by Masahiro Hara at Denso Wave, a member of the Toyota group in Japan.
It began as a factory-floor problem — traditional 1D barcodes held little data and had to be scanned one at a time, forcing workers to scan the same part repeatedly. Denso Wave developed a new code that could hold far more information and be read quickly from any angle. The design of its three "position-detection squares" was inspired by observing the black-and-white area ratios on a Go board.
The single most important factor was Denso Wave's decision to make the QR Code standard free to use, charging no licensing fees (while still holding the patent). This let software and hardware makers everywhere adopt it with no cost barrier. QR Codes also have several standout qualities:
High data capacity — up to 7,089 numeric characters, or over 4,000 alphanumeric characters, in a small area. • Error correction — built-in error correction keeps a QR readable even when up to 30% is damaged or covered (which is why a center logo works). • Fast omnidirectional scanning — the position-detection squares mean a reader does not need the code perfectly aligned.
The major turning point came once smartphones had cameras and internet as standard — especially after 2017, when iOS and Android cameras could scan QR codes natively without an extra app. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated QR codes into the norm for restaurant menus, contactless payment and check-ins. In Thailand, QR Codes are inseparable from daily life through the PromptPay system, which made scan-to-transfer and scan-to-pay routine for people of every age.
